What does freight mean?
Freight can mean both the cargo that is being transported, and the method of transportation itself. Goods travelling overseas can be referred to as ‘sea freight’ or ‘air freighting’ goods.
What is freight forwarding?
Freight forwarding is the co-ordination by specialised freight forwarding companies of the end-to-end shipping process. Freight forwarding companies act on behalf of cargo owners to arrange the transportation of goods, process customs documentation, track and monitor shipments, and manage the shipping process for the customer. Cargo insurance can also be arranged by the freight forwarder (although freight forwarders are only responsible for limited liability in freight contracts).
What do we mean by multimodal?
In multimodal transportation, different methods of transport are used to take goods from their point of origin to their final destination. Multimodal differs from intermodal transportation in that one freight transport company takes responsibility for the complete journey, covered by one contract. In intermodal transport, different contracts and different carriers are employed.
